6 Hour Emergency First Aid in the Workplace (EFAW)

Where an employer’s assessment of First Aid needs identifies that a First Aider is not necessary, the minimum requirement is to appoint a person to take charge of first aid arrangements and/or have trained personel in the HSE Recognised 6 hour Emergency First Aid in the Workplace (EFAW).

This 6 contact hour course meets the requirements for an Emergency First Aider as specified in the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 and is valid for three years. This course is primarily aimed at smaller workplaces that present potentially fewer health and safety risks, where a nominated individual is required to take charge in the event of illness or accident or that nominated person might assist the First Aider. The fully qualified First Aiders in larger organisations can also benefit from additional support from these other First Aiders. This is especially relevant where the workplace may consist of many floors, cover a large site or where work is operated in shift patterns.
